These pictures show us the terraces in this city. The terraces had a double function: they made agriculture possible, and they helped to reduce the effects of erosion that might otherwise have quickly destroyed the city.

The city of Machu Picchu is located between two mountain peaks, with deep valleys on either side. One side of the site overlooks the valley of the Urabamba River.
